Pecan is not a wood usually seen used in making a bowl but it is a hardwood and there is no reason not to use it. This piece has a spectacular grain pattern that makes it stand out. This piece is also spalted as shown by the black markings. Spalting is the result of a fungus getting into the wood that is part of the decaying process. Once the wood is dried - as this is - the process stops. The bowl is coated with four coats of food-safe finish and may be used as a serving dish or a salad bowl. Cleaning is done by hand washing in warm soapy water, rinse and drying. It does not require reoiling as with natural finishes. It is not dishwasher safe, microwavable and should no be use for extended refrigerated storage, Wooden utensils should be used for serving,
